  1. Charts. GlobeScan Reports on the Most Important Priorities for Corporate Affairs Professionals: leading with “Protecting reputation and building trust” it is interesting to note “Purpose” in the middle of the pack

2. Upcoming event/book. The Six New Rules of Business: Creating Real Value in a Changing World. January 13, 2021 at 5:00 pm EST by Judy Samuelson of The Aspen Institute as hosted by the Rotman Institute at the University of Toronto. Cost, includes a copy of the book, is $36.95 +HST and you can register here or just order the book online. This announcement was sent out earlier to give you more notice as the event is happening soon.

3. Employee Activism Results in the Alphabet Workers Union. Organized labour was often initiated to demand better working conditions but this unionization of Google employees seems to have been inspired by the employees dissatisfaction with Google’s behaviour. A trend to watch?

4. There is so much to say, and so many emotions to be processed, in response to the antics on Capitol Hill on Wednesday but from our perspective it is interesting to note how social media companies (finally) stepped up to block President Trump

Meanwhile in Canada, The Logic is reporting … “E-commerce giant Shopify has removed from its platform all online stores run by the Trump Organization and the Trump campaign following a deadly riot on Capitol Hill. A Shopify spokesperson told The Logic the sites were taken down on Thursday morning.after President Donald Trump sparked the insurrection by encouraging supporters to protest against the ceremonial counting of electoral votes confirming President-elect Joe Biden’s win. “Shopify does not tolerate actions that incite violence. Based on recent events, we have determined that the actions by President Donald J. Trump violate our Acceptable Use Policy…. As a result, we have terminated stores affiliated with President Trump,” reads a statement from the company. Visitors to sites that hosted Trump merchandise are now greeted with an error message.” They then go on to point out the hypocrisy of these social media companies and we would expect nothing less from The Logic

And the American Sustainable Business Council is urging businesses to sign on to their letter to Congress to immediately impeach Trump and Vice President Pence to invoke Section 25. #MayYouLiveInInterestingTtimes

4. Recommended Podcast. Apparently “Podcast Clubs” are replacing “Book Clubs” so check out Carol Cone, whom many of you may know, on Stew Friedman’s Work and Life Podcast as they discuss: “The history of business purpose, and learn more about what it takes to embrace social causes in the corporate world.”
